Kwame AlexanderA modern alternative to SparkNotes and CliffsNotes, SuperSummary offers high-quality Study Guides with detailed chapter summaries and analysis of major themes, characters, and more. For select classroom titles, we also provide Teaching Guides with discussion and quiz questions to prompt student engagement.
1. Using the poem and other resources from the unit, write a 4-5 paragraph summary of the struggles and successes of African Americans throughout history. Strive for an objective tone and strike a balance between the struggles and the accomplishments. In your summary, name at least one major figure from politics, social activism, science, education, literature, art, drama/film/television, music, and sports.
2. Choose another group of people who have experienced marginalization in America and write an ode celebrating this group of people and the historical figures within it. If you identify with a group that has faced discrimination, consider writing about that group, as Alexander did in “The Undefeated.” Focus on the victories of this group of people, and write your poem with children in mind.
