An old woman, Maud, discovers a broken compact in the snow: “I clutch at the compact lid in my hand, soil tightening my skin as it dries. I’ve missed this thing for nearly seventy years” (2). She appears confused, and her friend Elizabeth calls to her to come back inside.
When she discovers a compact in the snow, Maud knows that she’s found something significant, but she can’t remember why. The compact is like a portal to the past, bringing up Maud’s memories of losing her sister, Sukey, 70 years ago. The Prologue introduces the theme of digging to uncover something hidden and unearthing the past.
