Long Answer
1. Early in the novel Charlie says that he would have a better car if his mom hadn’t had so many children. The fact that Charlie must compete for resources in his family because he has so many siblings makes him angry. Charlie is also angry with Adam when he must compete with Emerald and Julian as well for Adam’s attention. Adam also describes Charlie as lacking patience, recounting an incident in which Charlie threw markers and tore artwork in the art room. (Various chapters)
2. Julian wants family and friends. He also wants clean, nice-looking clothing he can wear to school as well as a home where he is welcome and that he is not afraid of being removed from. Julian is afraid to have these things because he is afraid he doesn’t deserve them, afraid that he will lose them, and afraid that if he hopes for something it might never come true.
